In Uptown, work is nearly ready to begin on a five-story, transit-oriented rental building located steps from the Argyle CTA Red Line station. Developer Cedar St. Companies was granted a permit to begin construction at 1135 W. Winona Street, which is currently occupied by a parking lot.
Designed by Booth Hansen, the 65-foot-tall project includes ground-floor retail, 64 apartments, and no on-site parking. The upcoming structure will eventually connect via an elevated fourth-floor skybridge to a second five-story apartment building slated for the neighboring lot at 1131 W. Winona. The buildings are zoned for a combined 180 residential units.
The two Winona Street buildings are part of a sinlge Planned Development which also includes the 342-unit Draper apartments at nearby 5050 N. Broadway. The zoning change was approved under the city's previous affordable housing rules, which require 10 percent below market-rate units and all of the required affordable housing will be provided on-site.
