Construction is ready to begin on the new North Austin Community Center. The long-discussed sports and recreation project slated for 1815 N. Laramie Avenue was targeting a June or July groundbreaking and just received its foundation permit this week.
The two-story complex features more than 152,000 square feet of indoor space dedicated to sports, education, and wellness plus outdoor athletic amenities such as soccer fields. Multipurpose spaces and classrooms will provide after-school programming, mentorship opportunities, and community use.
The NACC is a joint venture between Grace and Peace Church, nonprofit By The Hand Club For Kids, and developer Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives. Chicago-based architecture firm TEAM A designed the facility and ARCO/Murray and GMA Construction Group will serve as contractors.
The $31.5 million development will occupy a five-acre parcel of land formerly owned by the city. The Chicago City Council approved the $2.1 million sale of the property in September. The North Austin Community Center also received a $1.5 million grant as a part of Gov. Pritzker's Rebuild Illinois capital plan. The West Side facility is expected to open in fall 2022.
