Construction is about to get underway on a large Amazon warehouse at the northwest corner of Kostner Avenue and Division Street in West Humboldt Park. The 140,000-square-foot, single-story distribution center scored an estimated $31 million building permit on Thursday. Premier Design + Build Group will serve as the general contractor.
The upcoming project occupies a 26-acre site previously owned by Allied Metal. The e-commerce and web services giant paid Allied more than $30 million for the property at 1260 N. Kostner Avenue, Crain's reported in June. Ald. Emma Mitts (37th) told the publication that the facility could bring as many as 500 much-needed jobs to her ward.
The West Side development represents Amazon's latest expansion in the Chicago area, joining existing fulfillment centers in neighborhoods such as Pullman and Gage Park. The West Humboldt Park warehouse is expected to open in late 2022 and will rise just south of a planned creative office project from developer IBT Group known as The Terminal.
