Advocate Health Care recently celebrated the groundbreaking of the new $300 million Trinity Hospital at the former U.S. Steel South Works site near the lakefront. Located at 8000 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive, the hospital will be built on 23 acres between Brandon Ave to the west, DuSable Lake Shore Drive to the north and east, and 81st Street to the south.

Sited on the 23-acre property, the hospital’s main access point will be via the intersection of S. DuSable Lake Shore Dr and S. Farragut Dr. A secondary access point will be at the south side of the site where S. DuSable Lake Shore Dr aligns with what would be E. 81st St. The site will provide 368 parking spaces for the hospital.

Designed by CannonDesign, the new state-of-the art community hospital will serve both inpatient and outpatient care. The five-story, 183,000 square foot building will be a 52-bed facility with medical-surgical, ICU, observation and dialysis beds; a modern emergency department with 16 treatment bays; advanced diagnostic imaging and testing; a cardiac catheterization lab and robotic surgical capabilities; and smart technology designed to make care more seamless, connected and patient-centered.

The building’s two-story base will have the main lobby and community space on the north side of the ground floor with diagnostic and treatment spaces occupying the rest of the first two floors. The third floor will be fully mechanical with patient beds on the fourth and fifth floors.

Designed as a two-story plinth with a three-story bed tower above, the project features sweeping curved facades made of metal paneling and glass curtain wall on the main northern facades, with metal paneling and precast concrete panels used on other facades. Locating the mechanical spaces on the third floor has allowed the patient beds to be elevated to take advantage of expansive views of the city skyline and Lake Michigan.

The existing Advocate Trinity Hospital on 93rd Street will remain open and continue serving patients until the new hospital is completed and operational, ensuring uninterrupted care for the community.
