The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation (HHDC) recently celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony to open its newest affordable residential development at 1237 N. California. Located at the northeast corner of N. California Ave and W. Crystal St, the project replaces a vacant site across from Humboldt Park.
“We’re proud to announce the completion of this family-focused project, another vital development in our strategy to prevent displacement and preserve the culture of the Humboldt Park community,” said Tony Hernandez, president and chief executive officer of HHDC. “Thanks to the hard work of our designers, builders, and financial partners, we are planting another flag for affordability and community.”
Designed by DesignBridge, the project is a six-story affordable residential building with 40 units. The project’s unit mix is comprised of 10 one-bedroom apartments, 25 two-bedroom apartments, and five three-bedroom apartments. Amenities include onsite management, a community room, indoor bicycle storage, and a laundry facility. 14 parking spaces will be located inside an interior garage with an additional 7 exterior parking spaces at the back of the property.
The project received financial support from public and private sources, including the City of Chicago, the Chicago Housing Authority, the Illinois Housing Development Authority, Merchants Capital, Freddie Mac, and ComEd through its Affordable Housing New Construction program.
Built by Path Construction, the $32 million project broke ground back in July 2024.
