The Chicago Plan Commission has approved a Lakefront Protection Ordinance application for the rehabilitation of Metra’s 59th/60th St Station in Hyde Park. Planned by Metra, the existing station is located at the east end of the Midway Plaisance with entrances at both E. 59th St and E.60th St.

Designed by Legat Architects, the renovation will remove and replace the existing headhouses, build new warming houses, reconstruct the ground-level depots with enlarged waiting areas, new stairs and elevators to make the stations compliant with ADA requirements.

The street level depots will be enlarged and enclosed with a glass enclosure for light, transparency and security while creating clear accessible pathways up to the platform through the new headhouses. The platform headhouses will be enclosed with textured concrete panels and glazed curtain wall with bird-friendly glazing. Bike racks will be located at each of the station entries.
