A zoning application has been filed to convert the office portion of the Pittsfield Building into apartments. Located at 55 E. Washington, the 38-story professional office tower stands at the corner of E. Washington St and E. Washington St. Designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst and White, the Pittsfield Building is a Chicago landmark.
Planned by investor Thomas Liravongsa, the existing office space in the building will be converted into 214 apartments, joining the existing 228 apartments already in the tower. To meet ARO requirements, 43 of the new units will be set aside as affordable. 214 bike parking spaces will be provided for the new apartments.
With Pappageorge Haymes Partners serving as the architect, the building’s exterior will remain largely unchanged. New outdoor space is proposed on the 23rd floor of the building for residents.
To allow for the residential conversion, the developer is seeking to rezone from DR-10 to DX-16 with an overall Planned Development. Approvals will be needed from the Chicago Plan Commission, Committee on Zoning, and City Council.
