Latin United Community Housing Association (LUCHA) recently celebrated the groundbreaking and naming ceremony for La Herencia Apartments, the redevelopment of the Humboldt Park United Methodist Church (HPUMC) at 2120 N. Mozart in Logan Square. The project will preserve the facade of the historic 1928 church that sits at the corner of N. Mozart St and W Shakespeare Ave.
“LUCHA’s work is about more than preserving a historic building—it’s about preserving the heart of our community. La Herencia ensures that families who have long called Logan Square home can continue to do so, with dignity and stability. This project reflects our commitment to housing as a human right and to keeping our neighborhoods inclusive and thriving,” states LUCHA Co-Executive Director Lincoln Stannard.
LUCHA will continue the church’s legacy by preserving the building’s iconic façade and offering 22 affordable homes for households earning at or below 60% AMI, with 10 of them planned to be deeply affordable units set aside for households at 15-30% AMI. Five apartments will serve as Permanent Supportive Housing units for individuals exiting homelessness or living with developmental disabilities, with wraparound services provided by Renaissance Social Services, Inc.
Designed by Canopy / architecture + design, the renovation will introduce a new elevator, accessible units, and shared outdoor courtyard and green spaces. Each unit will feature energy-efficient, all-electric appliances, new finishes, and in-unit laundry. The project also serves as a pilot for the City’s Decarbonization Program, incorporating all-electric systems and sustainable renovation practices.
