Named for Dr. Mary Thompson, Chicago’s first female doctor and the first woman known to have performed major surgery, The Thompson is comprised of a new, 12-story glass and concrete building designed by ParkFowler Plus. This structure is integrated directly with an original five-story brick building that was constructed in the 1920s as part of the hospital and located on the south side of the property.

“The Thompson at Fulton Market is a harmonious convergence of tradition and innovation, effortlessly intertwining a bold new design with the charm of a thoughtfully preserved historic building,” said Ann Reckelhoff, director of development at Marquette Companies. “This development – named after one of Chicago’s great women – demonstrates our aspiration to create much-needed housing for the community while simultaneously honoring the neighborhood’s past.”

Community amenities include the Collaboratory, a 24-hour coworking space that includes workstations and conference rooms; The Parlor, a social hub featuring a resident bar and lounge; a 24/7 fitness center and private exercise room; and a dog wash station. An outdoor courtyard located in the center of the renovated five-story building includes grill stations and seating and is enhanced by an adjacent covered terrace offering protection from the elements. On the penthouse level, an indoor lounge and a rooftop deck with outdoor seating overlooks Union Park and offers views of the Chicago skyline. Covered parking is available, including charging stations for electric vehicles and bike storage.

The adaptive reuse of the existing century-old structure inspired interiors at The Thompson, which are accented with retained features from the original building like exposed brick and massive concrete columns. These are complemented by the deep, rich colors and metallic accents of the finishes, fixtures and furnishings. Nationally renowned, Chicago-based artist Lefty Out There (aka Francesco Campanella) created several murals seen throughout the common areas, further rooting The Thompson in a sense of place.
